Director of Homelessness Research Institute
The Homelessness Research Institute, the research and education arm of the National Alliance to End Homelessness, works to end homelessness by building and disseminating knowledge that informs policy and practice. The goals of the Homelessness Research Institute are to build the intellectual capital around solutions to homelessness; to advance data and research so that policymakers, practitioners, and the caring public have the best information about trends in homelessness and emerging solutions; and to engage the media to ensure intelligent reporting on the issue.
Responsibilities:
- Conceive, write, and design research reports and communications products.
- Analyze existing data (Census, HMIS, and local point-in-time counts) using statistical software (SPSS).
- Summarize and contextualize relevant research and other knowledge about homelessness and make it accessible to policymakers, community leaders, journalists, and advocates.
- Engage networks of researchers and co-chair the organization’s Research Council.
- Work with members of the press to ensure that articles, news stories, opinion pieces, and other media about homelessness are factually accurate and focused on solutions.
- Develop and maintain relationships with leaders of networks that can serve as avenues for communicating ideas and information about homelessness.
- Oversee production and dissemination of Institute print and electronic publications, including the web site.
- Supervise other research and communication staff (research associate, communication associate, media associate).
- Coordinate strategic planning to maximize the Alliance's effectiveness at promoting the idea that homelessness is a problem with a cost-effective solution.
- Assist with fund raising to secure financial support for the ongoing operation of the Institute.
- Work closely and collaboratively with other Alliance staff members and partner organizations, and assume other responsibilities as determined by the President of the Alliance.
Qualifications:
- Expertise in research methods, knowledge dissemination, and media relations.
- Demonstrated commitment to and interest in issues related to homelessness and poverty.
- Graduate Degree, plus at least five years relevant experience working on poverty, housing, homelessness or related issues. PhD in related field a plus.
- Knowledge of research on homelessness, poverty, and/or related issues.
- Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, initiate, and implement tasks and initiatives. Personal initiative is important.
- Strong demonstrated organizational skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Commitment to using practical solutions to address social problems.
